Never Ever Give Up.

-Diana Nyad-

In 2013, Diana Nyad was the first person ever to swim from Cuba to Florida (without a shark cage). It was a 110 mile, record shattering swim.

It took 53 hours of non-stop swimming.

She was 64 years old.

… And it was her 5th attempt.

Her first attempt, at 28 years old, was thwarted by high winds and 8 foot swells that kept slamming her into the sides of the shark cage that was supposed to be protecting her. She swam 76 miles, but not in a straight line.

She didn’t give up. She found a way.

Her second attempt was riddled by strong currents and winds that pushed her miles off course in addition to shoulder pain and an asthma flare-up that made it difficult for her to breathe. (Can you imagine being a swimmer with asthma?)

She didn’t give up. She found a way.

Her third attempt was canceled because of multiple jellyfish and Portuguese man-of-war stings that caused respiratory stress.

She didn’t give up. She found a way.

Her fourth attempt covered the most distance, but was cancelled due to two storms and nine jellyfish stings.

She didn’t give up. She found a way.

And on her fifth attempt, she made it.

She didn’t give up. She found a way.

… Why am I telling you this?

Because I am so inspired by Diana Nyad’s persistence and relentless pursuit of her goal. She started a grueling training schedule for marathon swimming at 60 years old and accomplished what no other swimmer had ever accomplished, swimming from Havanna, Cuba to Florida… as a 64 year old woman.

(Insert reference to one of my favorite movies, Wedding Crashers… “No excuses, play like a champion.”)

This woman is. a. CHAMPION.

At the end of her historic swim, she stumbled out of the water and on to her feet and said,

“I HAVE THREE MESSAGES: ONE IS WE SHOULD NEVER EVER GIVE UP; TWO IS YOU ARE NEVER TOO OLD TO CHASE YOUR DREAMS; AND THREE IS IT LOOKS LIKE A SOLITARY SPORT BUT IT TAKES A TEAM.”

She said those lines were completely unrehearsed – simply spoken from her heart.

So, following in Diana’s footsteps, I want to say to YOU:

Never give up.

Its never too late.

And even though the odds may be against you, and it could take 5 or more attempts, doesn’t mean its impossible.

The very word IMPOSSIBLE, says,

I’M POSSIBLE.

You are. And so are your dreams.

LIGHT, LOVE, & PEACE,
Sincerely,

Jaclyn Steele

    1. I completely agree, Kathleen. This woman is so amazing… but we all are and I want EVERYONE to know that… even if their goals aren’t swimming 110 miles straight – We can ALL achieve our dreams if we never give up and find a way. <3 LOVE YOU!
