The Importance of Presence.
My mother was visiting this past week. She lives in the Midwest right now and I only see her a couple of times a year.
Throughout my life, she has taught me that time is a gift people rarely and fully extend to one another.
Sure we spend time with each other. We live in a world with several billion people – its impossible not to…
However, spending time in which you are fully present is a rare gift. What I mean by “fully present” is allowing your heart and mind to engage with the person you are with – not just physically be, but to actually look them in the eyes and tell them without words you are listening.
My mother’s love language is time spent, and normally, my days are filled with music, writing, free lance work, running errands, shows, dogs, and my husband – But while my mom was here, I made a conscious effort to slow down and spend quality time with her, as she did with me growing up.
I’ll never forget being a child and asking her question upon question. I was one of those children with an insatiable curiosity and unbridled energy that constantly kept my mother on her toes. You know what I remember most though? – Is her being delighted to answer my questions and to look at the world through my discovering eyes. She relished my curiosity and fanned it into flame… She helped to shape me into who I am today.
The least I could do was give her some uninterrupted time this week.
Or at least try to (There were a few times I got sucked back into work).
So that is why I did not create a REBEL Wednesday video. Those videos, even though they are short, require several hours to create if not more. I have to plan what I am going to say, set up the lighting and camera, film, edit, upload, write a blurb, and then create an email to notify everyone of its existence. It requires time that I was not willing to give up this week.
I am passionate about The REBEL Society, and I believe in its heart and mission, however, sometimes the people you love are even MORE important than the work you love.
Work and projects, even passion projects, will always be waiting. But family, and time spent with family, is not promised. Its. A. Privilege.
So, again, that is why there was no REBEL Wednesday video this week.
I unplugged and spent quality time with my Mama. And I’m so glad I did.
What do you need to unplug from? Who do you want to give your “presence” to?
