That age old adage is true: Put good in, get good out…
As you are releasing your amazing inner REBEL and daring life not to let you do what you love, it is incredibly important that you take good care of your mind.
Just like an athlete preparing for competition trains their body in the gym and is meticulous about the food they eat so they can optimize their performance, its imperative that you treat and train your mind in the same way.
Pursuing your dream is like training for competition in some ways. You must prepare. You must load up on nutritive foods. You must envision what you want.
After all… your thoughts become your words, your words become your actions, and your actions become your reality.
So if you want to change your reality, you have to change your thoughts.
What are you feeding your mind? What are you feeding your thoughts? What kind of books are your reading? What kind of movies/TV shows are you watching? What kind of people are you listening to and hanging out with?
All of these factors aid in the formulation of your thoughts – which become your words – which become your actions – which become your reality… you get the idea.
This is important stuff. So important that Brené Brown in her book, Daring Greatly, talks about our thoughts and the practice of foreboding joy – which essentially means that anytime you feel joy, you immediately think of ways in which that joy can be pulled out from under you. Sadly, foreboding joy isn’t really joy at all because its not truly felt – its held at arm’s length for fear that it will be taken away.
Brené Brown goes on to say:
“Our culture assists in this doom-filled rehearsal: Most of us have a stockpile of terrible images that we can pull from at the instant we’re grappling with vulnerability. I often ask audience members to raise their hands if they’ve seen a graphically violent image in the past week. About twenty percent of the audience normally raises their hands. Then I reframe the question: “Raise your hand if you’ve watched the news, CSI, NCIS, Law & Order, Bones, or any other crime show on TV?” At that point about eighty to ninety percent of the audience hands go up. We have the images we need to activate foreboding joy right at our neurological fingertips.
We’re visual people. We trust, consume, and mentally store what we see.”
If you want to dare life not to let you do what you love – consume healthy things. Read books that inspire you and activate your passion and creativity. Watch shows and movies that do the same. Hang out with people who are also daring greatly. Before long, the thoughts you think will change radically along with your words, your actions, and your reality.
Just like feeding your body healthy, organic foods aids in its peak performance, so feeding your mind healthy “food” aids in your life’s peak performance.
